Probably the most popular hunting activity in our mountains is for whitetail deer. Liberal limits and a long season in the fall allow archer, muzzleloader and firearm enthusiasts to try their luck in the thousands of acres of Eastern Hardwood provided by the Cherokee National Forest. We are also blessed with a stable and sustainable population of grey squirrel, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, some waterfowl, and even the elusive black bear. While other areas of our country are increasingly posted or leased by clubs; Unicoi County’s largest landowner is the U.S. Forest Service and they provide many hours of enjoyment and sport for hunters.
